Exercise Epsilon Nd-value

Granite sample S81 from the Damara orogen in Namibia has a Nd and Sm concentration of 46.4 ppm and 13.6 ppm, respectively, and a present-day (i.e. measured) 143Nd/144Nd isotope ratio of 0.512155. The U-Pb zircon age of the sample is 515 Ma. Calculate the initial 143Nd/144Nd isotope ratio and the corresponding initial εNd value of the sample (initial means the values at the time of granite formation 515 Ma ago).

Additional information: The present-day isotope abundances of 147Sm and 144Nd are 15.00% and 23.80%. The molar masses of Sm and Nd are 150.36 and 144.24 g/mol. All other inforamtion (CHUR data, decay constant of 147Sm etc.) can be found on the overheads.

Please note: If not stated otherwise, the exercises have to be solved before the next lecture starts, and need to be uploaded in time in OPAL, preferrably as a PDF document. Submitting spreadsheet files is permitted.

The file name of the PDF file with the solution of each exercise has to meet the following convention:
"Name_Surname_Matr.Nr._Exercise_Exercise-Number.pdf" or "..._Exercise_name.pdf"
Example: "Pfaender_Joerg_0815_Exercise_1.pdf" or "..._Exercise_REE.pdf"

Note that solving the exercises is obligatory to be accepted for the written or oral examination. At least 50% of the exercises have to be solved correctly, and the result will count by 20% to the final grade. If written explanations are required for selected exercises, do not exceed the maximum number of words allowed, otherwise the exercise counts as failed. Try to be concise in your text, with as many information as possible within a minimum of text.
