Exercise Oceanic lithosphere

1) Describe the lithological buildup of the oceanic lithosphere starting from the mantle part (see also overhead 46 inset). What rock types occur, and what is their overall mineralogy?

2) Olivine and pyroxenes are silicate minerals that form solid-solutions. What are the end-members of these minerals, and what is the chemical formula of these end-members? What is the difference between orthopyroxene and clinopyroxene?

Please note: If not stated otherwise, the exercises have to be solved before the next lecture starts, and need to be uploaded in time in OPAL, preferrably as a PDF document. Submitting spreadsheet files is permitted.

The file name of the PDF file with the solution of each exercise has to meet the following convention:
"Name_Surname_Matr.Nr._Exercise_Exercise-Number.pdf" or "..._Exercise_name.pdf"
Example: "Pfaender_Joerg_0815_Exercise_1.pdf" or "..._Exercise_REE.pdf"

Note that solving the exercises is obligatory to be accepted for the written or oral examination. At least 50% of the exercises have to be solved correctly, and the result will count by 20% to the final grade. If written explanations are required for selected exercises, do not exceed the maximum number of words allowed, otherwise the exercise counts as failed. Try to be concise in your text, with as many information as possible within a minimum of text.
